BYU, Fresno State grab ESPN poll Top 25 votes

Brigham Young and Fresno State each received recognition in the newly-released ESPN.com / USA Softball Top 25 poll out this morning.

The Cougars earned eight votes, while the Bulldogs received three, to rank 29th and 34th, respectively. No other WAC team earned a preseason Top 25 vote.

The Pac-12 Conference leads the way with seven members of the Top 25. In a sport that has increasingly been dominated by teams from BCS-affiliated conferences, a shocking 19 of the Top 25 teams come from just three conferences (Pac-12, SEC and Big 12).

At the top of the poll, the Pac-12 dominates. Defending national champion Arizona State is ranked No. 1, with California ranked No. 3. All seven Pac-12 teams in the poll are ranked among the top 14 teams in the nation.

Both BYU and Fresno State are in their last year as WAC softball members. The Cougars will depart the conference for the PCSC after their lone season as an affiliate member. The Bulldogs, the WAC's all-time winningest softball program, will join the Mountain West Conference on July 1.
